Brief History of Monmouth

Monmouth University is a private university in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Founded in 1933 as Monmouth Junior College, it became Monmouth College in 1956 and Monmouth University in 1995 after receiving its charter.

Monmouth was founded in 1853  to provide an opportunity for higher education to area high school graduates who, in those Depression-era days, could not afford to go away to college. It was a two-year institution, holding classes only in the evening.

Monmouth College was founded on April 18, 1853. The name of the college comes from the town in which it’s located: Monmouth, Illinois. Presbyterian religious pioneers, who were from the western side of Illinois found Monmouth College.

These pioneers felt that the city of Monmouth needed a higher institution of learning around the area. This led to a small group of lawyers, farmers, and business executives donating $1,150 dollars to establish Monmouth College.

Note that Monmouth College did not start off as Monmouth College. Monmouth College was first known as Monmouth Academy when it was established.
